Ponseti Ankle Foot Orthosis Abduction

The Ponseti AFO brace has been developed by John Mitchell in consultation with Dr. Ponseti as a result of problems occurring with other types of brace.

The Ponseti brace consists of sandal type footwear attached to an adjustable brace with built in dorsiflexion. The sandals can easily be adjusted to give the correct level of abduction for the clubfoot. The sandals are attached to the bar by means of a ‘Quick Clip’ system which enables the sandals to easily be clipped to, and unclipped from the bar for greater ease of use.

This enables parents to get a better fit as the sandals can be put on without having to turn the feet outwards first. The bar can then be clipped on after the sandals have been fitted. For children who wear the bar whilst in a highchair, or in a shopping trolley, it means the length of time without the bar is greatly reduced. Practically, parents will find the Quick Click system easier to use when toliet training their children at night!

The footwear consists of a well moulded rubber footplate and soft leather straps. The foot is held securely to the footplate and there is no slippage. Babies do not require a period of adjustment and accept the brace readily.

The brace was originally intended to be used in cases of atypical/complex clubfoot. Following it’s remarkable success, and positive feedback from parents, some hospitals are now using this brace exclusively for all cases of clubfoot treated using the Ponseti method.

The Ponseti AFO abduction brace is to be used after the clubfoot has been corrected by manipulation followed by serial casting and possibly a heel cord tenotomy, in accordance with the Ponseti method of treatment. When used on atypical/complex clubfoot, the brace aids further correction by gradually increasing flexibilty and dorsiflexion.

The location of the heel can easily be seen through two holes in the back of the sandals. With stiff feet, progress can easily be seen as the heel ‘comes down’ further in the sandal each week.

John Mitchell has used the finest materials available for the Ponseti AFO brace. The patented design uses suede leather and the soft rubber conforms to the child’s feet for their comfort.
