Fitting the Ponseti AFO
- Always wear good fitting socks with the Ponseti AFO
- Place the foot as far back into the sandal as it will go. Hold in place with your thumb over the joint. Check the location
- Bring over the middle tongue, ensuring it is placed diagonally over the front of the leg rather than over the top of the foot. Do up the middle strap, ensuring that that the small hole in the middle tongue is visible.
- If toes are curled, uncurl them, and do up bottom strap.
- Do up top strap, ensuring it goes over the top of the tongue, and the small hole in the tongue is showing beneath it.
- Check the location of the heel – if it has moved up since start of fitting, undo the straps and start again, always ensuring the foot is held back as far as it can be in the sandal.
- The middle strap should be done up tight, particularly if the heel is not down (which can take up to 6 weeks). The other straps should be firm but not tight. Once the foot is able to sit flat in the shoe, the strap can be held firm rather than tight.
- Connect bar to sandals. The bar should be shoulder width or slightly longer.
Parents of infants born with clubfeet may be reassured that their baby, if otherwise normal, when treated by expert hands will have normal looking feet with normal function for all practical purposes. The well-treated clubfoot is no handicap and is fully compatible with a normal, active life.
